Can I use Direct Play with Visual Basic to create a sort of Battle.net

I have created a game in Visual Basic 6.0 that I would like to make two-player over TCP. I know I can use Winsock to connect two computers whose users know each other's IP addresses, but I would like to create a lobby online that would enable users to find each other and then have the connection go between the two computers for the multi-player part.

I'd rather use an earlier version than DirectPlay8 (i.e. 4), since I think that using 8 excludes alot of people, and since it is a small game that people will download from the internet, I won't be able to redistribute DirectX8 on cd like the pros.

I have the DirectPlay documentation, but it is written for C. I can probably use it to figure out the VB code, but I would like to know if all the functionality of DirectPlay is available for VB (I don't want to learn something I can't use).

It seems to me that this would be one of the largest uses of DirectPlay, and that it shouldn't be all that difficult to put into place.

If anyone has any input, even if it has nothing to do with DirectPlay it would be appreciated.
