Can I use a DSL Router for a ADSL Connection?

I have decided to upgrade to AOL broadband. I live in the UK and what i can gather AOL uses an ADSL connection.

The main thing i can't understand is this: What is the difference between ADSL and DSL (if any) and can i use a linksis DSL router on this type of connection for internet sharing?

Both my brother and i would like to access the internet at the same time using different computers.

Both our PC's have Windows XP Pro.
They are already networked with a crossover cable and standard PCI network cards.

You will be fine.
1. ADSL is a form of DSL. There are different types of DSL: ADSL, SDSL IDSL, HDSL, to name a few. ADSL is Asynchronos(Sp) Digital Subsciber Line. The Download is faster than the upload. And yes, you can use a Linksys router just fine for this.
2. You will need to get 2 straight-thru cables, and you will connect them to the Linksys built-in switch ports. Both of you will be able to surf to your hearts content...

Can I use a router without an in-built switch since i already have a network installed?

Can one pc connect to the net if the other machine is turned off.

You will need either a hub or one of your machines needs 2 NICs. To answer your second question, yes. If you don't want both machines on the 'Net at the same time, it will work. Take into consideration that while one machine is on the 'Net, the other will not be able to communicate with it unless it is multi-homed....

If you already have a switch then no problem, you can just plug the router into that.
