In a recent post someone suggest hitting ctlr-alt-del to see what was running in the background slowing down my computer and giving me fits. I have Windows ME and when I do this it shows Explorer running. I don't use Explorer as my browser, so is there some way I can stop it from running possible slowing my down, or does windows have to have it run in the background to operate?

You can use other shells, program manager for example but I don't think it supports LFN.
There are many listed at link below.

Sorry you are having trouble with your machine. Perhaps you could post your system
spec's and complaints and the members here could have a go at getting you up to
speed before you have to make such a drastic move? System, software, hardware the whole
shebang, plus your specific problems. Maybe someone can help. Many Explorer users have
fine running systems, why not you too..!

If you are determined to switch however, try here for a start:

I have NO personal experience with these as "Explorer substitutes".

Good Luck smitee

The Explorer you see running not Internet Explorer but the system Explorer program.
Yes, It does have to run in the background to operate.
If Internet Explorer is running it will show up as IEXPLORER. I would ask you check and see if your virus software is running check everything. Which will slow your computer to crawl.
Also if Windows Manager is running it will slow you down. Go to Start, run, and in the open box type msconfig.exe, select startup tab, and see what is being started on boot-up. Uncheck anything you do not want to start like Realplayer, Win Media player, etc.
You can also go to and search for Startup Cop and download it.
It is a good tool for fixing what you do not want to start.
