thank you very much
Hey windows xp has a built in recovery console, this will allow you to pretty much repair windows xp without formatting it....however u need the windows xp cd to do this:
DOS Mode is now called Command Prompt. In Windows XP (FAT32 or NTFS) you can go into Command Prompt from Start>All Programs>Accessories. You can also boot into Safe Mode Command Prompt by repeatedly pressing F8 immediately after the initial boot screen. But in either of those you cannot repair your HD (hard disk). However, you can schedule CHKDSK to run at the next boot up. You can also convert from FAT32 to NTFS there. Type Help at the command prompt. Also look up the Convert command in Help & Support.
You can also do Windows Repair in normal Windows mode by inserting the WinXP CD. It will bring up a menu. Select the top option from it.
In order to do serious repairs, reinstalls, etc. you need to boot from the WinXP CD. First go into BIOS Setup at the initial boot screen and make sure the first option is set to booting from CD. Insert your WinXP CD. Then Save & Exit from the BIOS Setup - it will reboot. After the initial boot screen it will tell you right at the top to "press any key" if you want to boot from the CD. If you don't press any key within about 30 seconds it will proceed to boot as normal. So immediately press any key. It will start booting from the WinXP CD. It may take 5/10/15 minutes to finish coming up so be patient. Then it will ask you whether you want to install WinXP, do a Repair, etc. Choose what you want to do and go on from there.
I would strongly recommend that you do a full backup before you start tampering with your system.
