Hi, we have a small company with about 12 computers on this windows xp peer to peer network, and I wanted to set the computer we use as the server to have a static ip so when I connect remotely it will go to that computer only, we have a linksys router we use and it's set so the ip address changes, so I guess my question would be is there a setting on the linksys router I could do this with or can I set something on just that computer to keep the same IP? I'm no IT guy as you can tell but always get selected for this sort of thing at our company, any help is really appreciated, thank you.

Lance

Yes you can set 1 machine to a static IP address.

By default, most Linksys routers assign DHCP addresses 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.150 Therefore, you can manually assign an IP address outside that range without conflict - something like 192.168.1.10 Remember that the router itself gets 192.168.1.1 Obviously, if the router settings have been changed from the defaults, you will need to adjust accordingly.

To set the IP address for XP machine in question, just right click on that machine's network connection, Properties, TCP/IP, Properties button, and manually assign outside the router's DHCP range.

Also router's config usually allow you to set static IP address for specific device(s).

okay now I feel stupid, ummm I did that under the windows network and changed my ip address to what you said, but now that I did that what should I do on the router settings? I'm not sure where to go in there to make changes so it knows I changed the address on this one computer? or is that possible? thanks.

You might not need to do anything with the router. But you do need to access the router setup to make sure that you are using and IP address outside the dhcp range, otherwise you will have a conflict or won't be able to connect to the network. You can usually access Linksys routers admin at

okay here is what my setting is on below, I must be doing something wrong here, I did try to change the ip address to say 192.168.1.15 under the network settings under xp, but then after it took I could not connect to anything, so not sure what I'm doing wrong?

Local DHCP Server: EnableDisable
Start IP Address: 192.168.1.
Number of Address: 50
DHCP Address
Range: 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149

There are a couple of bits of info that I didn't specifically state in my earlier post that are also required. In addition to assigning a static IP address on the computer, you need to setup your subnet mask, internet gateway & dns servers.

Set your computer back to 'obtain ip address automatically' and 'obtain dns servers automatically'. Then, open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all Post the results back into this thread.

ok on that obtain an ip auto we have a static IP address here through SBC, so should I still do that?

okay here is what it said

C:\Documents and Settings\Lance McCarty>ipconfig /all

If you want one machine to have a static IP address and visible outside of your netwrok, then it has to be like a web server and have a static IP address from your ISP. I suppose there are some services or programs on the Internet to make this happen with a non-static IP Address but everytime the IP address changes you would have to republish the IP Address to associate your domain name with the IP address.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

ok that worked great what you said! but now the problem is my remote desktop will not work, maybe I should give up on this, lol I just don't know enough about this stuff, but yeah I did the ip address fine and now the computer has the 192.168.1.15 but when I try and connect through remote desktop it does not find it anymore, before when it would have whatever the router picked for the ip and I forwarded that 3389 port it would work, but not sure what it's doing now, but thanks for the help everyone.

Sorry, I got lost... Are your trying to use RD to connect to this machine from inside the network or outside the network? Are you using IP address or computer name? In order to access RD from outside the network, the router will need to be set to forward port 3389 TCP to 192.168.1.15

Hi, umm yeah from outside the network yes, I forwarded port 3389 like you said to that ip address but does not connect for some reason, but if I put it back to the normal way where it picks the ip, then it works? I'm lost lol

woohoo!! it worked, I was putting the wrong ip down on the forward port section on the router, lol, but yeah it works great, thank you for all the help on this, I really appreciate this, take care.
