Can I run a single processor machine with an SMP kernel?

I downloaded the BIGMEM rpm kernel and noticed that is available in only SMP. My machine is single processor, can I still use that kernel? It is safe to use it?

I'm running an SMP kernel on my P4 machine. Not sure if thats because of the hyperthreading though. Never tried on anything less.
