Can I remove the root domain of my forest?

Currently we have two domains in our forest that trust each other. One domain (the forest root) has all of our user accounts, user data, etc and the other has our Exchange server in it. What we would like to do is move all of our users to the Exchange domain and do away with the original domain. Is it possible to remove the first domain in the foerst and keep our other domain in tact? I know that the root of the forest holds some roles that the other servers do not like the schema master and domain naming master so would it be that we just need to transfer these roles or is there alot more involved and can this even be done? I am fairly new to active directory and I don't want to hose the whole thing up. Thank you.
