Can I prevent spammers from sending email to our distribution groups? 1

I have a universal distribution group that includes everyone in the active directory. Until recently, I was unaware that users outside of our network could send email to it using an email address or that it even had an email address.

I do have a spam filter, but I would prefer if there was no email address at all, just a mechanism by which my exchange users can email each other using the address book.

Is there a way to set this distribution group up such that only my exchange users can email each other using the distribution group but no one can send email to the distribution group from the Internet?

Easiest thing is if you're firewall has an SMTP proxy, just block all incoming to that address.

Remove the SMTP address for the distribution group.

or change the permissions on your distro group to only allow listed user/groups to mail that group.

also, I would think checking the 'authenticated users' only would block spammers since they are not authenticated on your network? Or is this a 2003 option only?

The way we do this is with a global security list. Everyone in the company is a member of this security list. For the distribution list, we just say that only members of the security list can send to the distribution list.

Thank you sab4you! That worked like a champ. Its actually more useful that way too cause I do have a few salespeople not part of exchange outside the company that might like to use this "newly" discovered feature.
