Im in the process of changing ISPs and Im curious if I can have the same rDNS name on the new IP while the old IP is active. This way I can control the transition through my router and not have to worry about my mail server smarthost name.

Im pretty sure this is OK, but just wanted to bounce the idea with the rest of you.

Yes you can have the same hostname specified for multiple rDNS (pointer) records.
