Can I edit a Windows 98 roaming profile?

Hey All.

I formatted and reinstalled Windows 98 on a computer and copied everything, with regards to it's configuration. A user who had an existing roaming profile log'd in and couldn't use Microsoft Office, because an error message came up and said it wasn't installed, when it clearly is.

The question I have: is it possible to edit a roaming profile, or do I just have to wipe the slate clean, and rebuild the roaming profile for that user?

A roaming profile is stored on the users home drive. You can update the shortcut or link to the program you want changed.

But, if I point the link to the executable, it still gives me the error that the software isn't installed. Maybe I need to update the USER.DAT in the roaming profile?

Is the 98 machine set up for multiple users? (users and passwords icon). You could try copying the user.dat file from \windows on the 98 machine to overwrite the version in the users roaming profile (obviously back the original up first). Does the rest of the roaming profile 'agree' with software installed on 98 machine (ie, you might be better off copying start menu too)?

If that's no good, I suppose you could reinstall Office from the user concerned.

Yes, the machine is setup for multiple users.

I never thought about the user.dat copying... I'll give that a try.

But, if Office were re-installed from the user, wouldn't that cause a problem with the other users, trying to use Office? At least that's what I've seen from my exprience.
