Can Exchange Do this?

My organization has asked me to come up with a solution for 10000 users. Now, I realize thats not huge, but to me its a bit daunting seeing as I have never really had to do anything but troubleshoot the odd exchange server here and there.

How many users can a top of the line Xeon 3.0 ghz with 2 gigs of ram and unlimited HD space support? Fibre channels to all appropriote devices.

I was thinking of a small 2 machine cluster, a total of 4 CPU's. Cost really isnt a factor, getting an idea of Exchange's Capabilites is more the idea at this point. Does anyone have any links or articles that may be beneficial? I started searching on google and the MSKB but I didnt find anything that didnt talk about real world capacities.

The best might be links to universities or corperations that have a similiar amount of users and any experiences thay may have had. Thanks in advance!

What do you want to do? If its testing/sim stuff, don't bother clustering. You need to get an idea of throughput. 1,000 emails per day is nothing for a little server - I'm rarely getting 10% cpu usage on a P III from 3,000 a day.

Why 10,000 users and are they all sending emails all day?

I need to be able to handle 10,000 active user accounts. This is going to be for a college campus. So, I dont know how many emails a day, but lets assume each person will be sending and receiving 5 a piece each day. 50,000 messages in and out bound each day. I am just looking for exchange 2000 limitations and recommendations

that's not going to tax exchange but maybe you'll need a decent disk array going to need exchange enterprise.

10,000 students won't all be using it every day! if you aren't developing software and are just looking to implement exchange, search this forum as its been covered several times.
