I just have a quick question about the functionality of Backup Exec vs their other products like the Network Storage product.

Currently we back up files from NT server nightly to tape.

I want to do the same thing, except to an IP address for offsite backup. Will BE support this? If not what product will?

Thanks, Jeff

IF the machine can be reached by IP..such as \\10.x.x.x from the media server then backup exec can get to by a user defined selection by ip. As far as performace that would be the real question. Anything less than a T-1 I wouldnt waste time if you backing up the whole server. Just my thoughts. Before I would take that route from the media server \\remote machine and find 300 megs or so and copy it over and see how fast it will copy in windows to determine if it will be a good solution.

Thanks,

We have a T1 on both sides, and It looks like it will be several gig a night, but bandwidth is not an issue due to the time of day the job would be running. I am just not familiar enough with the different options we have. This is going to an external IP address, but I suppose it will be private when it goes throught the VPN. I guess we could use iSCSI, or maybe a NAS would work if the VPN is established. As long as it can get to a remote share, then all will be well. Restoral procedure should be easy as well.

We are running an older copy of BE that predates any of these offsite backup scenarios. I was just wondering what everyone else is doing in this situation, so your answer helps me out.

Thanks! Jeff
