Folks: I am at my wits end trying to figure out a crazy windows 2000 problem <pulling hair> We have a customer who had the hard drive fail in an exchange 2000/DC machine. We were able to replace the drive, and restore a full backup (about a month old) using ntbackup (while in directory recovery mode) on the exact machine it came off of. Now (after leaving it alone for awhile to let AD synch up) it is letting me connect from it to all the other DCs (map drives, manage, etc) but I cannot connect to it (map drives, manage, etc) from any other machine. When you try to map a drive you get: Login failure: The target account is incorrect and when you try to manage it from another machine you just get access is denied.

I am also getting event ID 675, Pre Authentication Failed, krbtgt, type 0x2, Code 0x18.... On the server you try to connect to it (the "bad" one) from.

I tried to read up on this but I am not strong when it comes to FRS which I suspect might be part of the problem. Also note I have tried to simplify the DNS...down to one DNS server and all the DCs are set the same as far as that goes. (the ill server was a DNS server before the restore if that makes any difference?)

Please forgive my scattered babbling...I am on hour 29 with no sleep <snicker> trying to get this thing running <sigh>

Thanks!
Coty

Lastly

OK...to add to my own question: I just tried mapping\managing directly to the IP address instead of the name (both with or without the domain) and it works like a champ? What in the world am I missing in DNS????

Thanks
Coty
