Here are my three questions concerning security;
(1) When the security wizard creates the secured dB, should we leave the name as the default (SecureDb.mdb), or change it?
(2) When we begin creating the list of groups and users, do we enter this in the new Securedb.mdb or the original db.mdb?
(3) Are the users pathed to the original dB or the new Securedb (on our server)?

I have read alot of information, but nothing really covers these questions. Can anyone clear up my confusion or know of a web site that covers this type of topic? Thanks for trying to help! "Try everything at least once."

1) Doesn't make any difference. The secure variables are stored in the binary file in a system area.
2) When you are creating the new list of groups/users you need to be using the System database (.mdw file) that is matched to the secure database. I recommend you set permissions for the groups and assign group permissions to the usernames.
3) I'm confused what you mean by 'are the users pathed'. I recommend you create an icon on each desktop the has the target property set. Something like:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 97\Office\MSACCESS.EXE" "f:\groups\sdv\add-ins\shipmsg\shippingmsg.mda" /wrkgrp f:\groups\sdv\dmats\system.mdw

So you see the system knows which copy of access to use, where the database is, and what workgroup to use.

What I don't understand is that when you use the Security wizard (Acc 97) it prompts you for a name to save the secure db. Do we change this name (to the same as the original db name) or leave as SecureDb.mdb? B/c if you change the name, you now have 2 databases. So this is what I mean by which one. Also, I was under the impression that you create the groups using the User-Level Security Groups and Users tab (something like that)? Do I actually have to go to the .mdw file, open it up and create accounts there? all the information I downloaded stated to open the database (never stating the old one or the new secure one). Am I confusing all this up??? "Try everything at least once."

(1) Keep your unsecured db somewhere safe. You should now work only with your secured db. The name of it does not matter at all. If you move your unsecured db to another folder then you can rename.

(2)If you ran access security wizard straight from an unscured db then it is odds on that you are using the system.mdw file in your WINDOWS/SYSTEM folder. You will find it useful to move a copy of your system.mdw file into your db folder. Create a shortcut on your desktop and set the target of this to something like....

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\MSACCESS.EXE" "path_to_.mdb" /wrkgrp "path_to_system.mdw"

When you log on you need to go to security manager, and select user accounts. In "admin" user, set a password. Now create a new user with ADMIN group permissions, and revoke ADMIN permissions from "admin" user.

Close the db and restart through the shortcut. You should now be prompted for a username and password. Use your newly created account with a blank password. (Change this later!)

Hope this makes just a little sense!!!! B-)
