Can arithmeic calculations be done in xml? ie can one shell out to say MathML, do a calculation and put the retrieve the result in into a xml document

I think XML is just a way of presenting data so it has a standard which any program can understand if you know the rules.
You would do the calculations is a higher level program which is creating the XML code. Then output the answer in XML
