I am looking at setting up a Win2K Server in our office and would like to get some licensing information.

There are 6 computers in the office, 4 are running Win2K Pro, 1 NT 4.0 and the last Win XP. They are all licensed, is this considered a CAL (client access license) or do I need to purchase 6 CAL's with my Win 2K Server?

If they are going to connect to the server (i.e. it's a file server), then yes, you need 6 CAL's.

I know these are sold in packs of 5, so I am trying to get an understanding of Per Server now.

Since I have 6 PCs, there shouldn't be a time when all 6 pcs are accessing the server at once. Does the Per Server hand out licenses as computers connect then put them back.

For example: I login and authenticate with Win2K Server, but never access any files. Will it give me a license to authenticate then take it back?

Basically...yes. Now, here's the dirty little secret...you could not buy any additional licenses, and your systems will function just fine....up until the time the software police knock on your door, ask to see your licenses, and cart everything away when you can't present them. ;-)

If you're only going to have a maximum of five users connected to the server at any one time, buy a 5-pack per server and be done with it. If a sixth person does try to connect to the server, they will just fine, and no alarms or anything will go off, but you will be, technically, non-compliant.

To be honest, CAL's are so cheap, I'd buy each system a CAL and not worry about it. Just not worth the headache in the long run.

At £6 a CAL I don't think it will break the bank.
