I have the need to implement a caching device at my remote locations. I understand that Cisco has some offerings and I am sure there are others on the market. I am hoping you can make some recommendations for me. I currently have Cisco 2600 (2610, 2620, or 2620XM) routers at my remote locations. What is your experience with such applications, devices, or appliances?

Are you just talking about simple HTTP caching?

I've had experience with Cisco's Cache Engine many years ago, but I'm not even sure if that is still available. Their Content Engine has superseded them, if I remember correctly. They worked perfectly well and you can't beat the convenience of an appliance.

If you just need basic web caching on a budget, I'd recommend Squid.

Yes, just http / https caching. Unfortunately our management puts their foot down against anything Unix or Linux (unless maybe the OS on an appliance). I am probably going to be limited to something in the Windows, Cisco, or HP lines.

Don't you hate it when management gets involved in technical decisions? ;-)

you could look at the cachine engines that go into the routers now...

Hi there,

You may like to look into the Cisco Cache Engine, 500 or 505 bundles, come with 2 hard disk about 20Gig capacity and fits well and transparently into your network. Confirguration is straight forward, activate wccp protocol on your service router, and give cache engine same IP from same block as your gateway ( which must be a cisco router); and that's it... If you need specific command lines do not resitate to ask.
Besides Cache engines are out of series, but you can get reburbished ones with guarantee from Network Hardware Resale : Scot does a good job there.

Otherwise, you may look into Netappliance, its pretty good but quite expensive.

cheers
