Hello everyone, first of all I would like to say I really enjoy these forums and I read over all the threads and learn new things etc... I hope that one day I can be as knowledgeable as some of you. I am a CCNA and I'm working on my CCDA and trying to complete it so I can continue on my CCNP. In the meantime I just had a cable modem installed (I know not another cable modem, lol) and I am in need of any help in configuring two pc's to run off of it via a 2501 router. I have read some of the previous cable modem/router installs and configs but I'm not sure where to start. I'm at the basics so I'm not exactly sure what each command in the running configs I've seen does. Can anyone please help me get the ball rolling on this. Thanks to anyone who can help.

all u need to configure for is NAT on the router.. set up your cable modem interface on the router as normal.. i'd assume either ethernet or serial..

configure one interface on the router to be part of your local network, on which the 2 PCs u want to create access for are seated.. this will be your inside interface...

configure another external interface on which your cable modem is connected, and set this up as your outside interface....

create a NAT rule that maps your internal IP addresses back to your public IP address as assigned by your ISP... chances are u will assign this public IP to your serial interface, or the interface on which your cable modem is installed....

the idea would be to overload your internal PC's IP addresses, either via static routes or access lists [i'd recommend access lists], onto the serial interface.. this would effectively translate all your internal IPs into the single public IP seated on your cable modem interface... thus, NAT'ing or masquerading...

since u're CCNA, i think u will be able to take care of the actual config details..

good luck..

Well, it you have only 1 2501 router, then I don't think it is possible to get the PCs online with it. You need a router with at least 2 ethernet interfaces (one to connect to the modem, and one to connect to your LAN). But since hte 2501 only has 1 ethernet and 2 serial interfaces, then it isn't possible.

I know that in the past there was someone who found a serial to ethernet cord, but it could cause problems, I can't remember what happened with him.

You would be better off using a 2514, or getting another 2501 and hooking them up with a back to back serial connection. In either case it gives you the two required ethernet interfaces. By the way, I use the 2514 to route my cable service.

Hope this helps.

Thanks StarTac I do know and understand what you mean. I will work on this today and let everyone know what happens.

rburke, I do realize what you are saying as well but I do have a cat 12000 that I will connect the pc's to so that should solve that problem. (sorry I didn't mention that before) Thanks for looking out for me.

Thanks again to you both.
