C:\windows\system\vm32.vxd missing unable to load

I have a PC, Windows 98, when I boot it up the following message comes up:
C:\windows\system\vm32.vxd missing unable to load
Press any key to continue

When I press a key the PC turns off, when I turn it back on sometimes I get lucky and can get into Safe Mode. When I try to do anything in it I usually get the following message:
Explorer invalid page fault n module shell32.dll at 0167:7fccc610

and the CD ROM is not working anymore, when I go to system properties it says the device is working properly

Any ideas what I can do??

Is it VM32.VXD, or is it VMM.VXD?

At any rate, did you, by chance, just finish installing a Umax Scanner? If so, then this is a known problem. You can find a patch on Umax's website.

Also, your CDROM drive will not work in safe mode. This is by design, not a problem Mudskipper

It is not my PC and there told me vm32.vxd, but now I'm not sure, sorry, what is the difference

Not gonna be checking my posts for a couple of days, sorry (gone for the weekend). The difference is simply that I haven't personally seen vm32.vxd (not to say that it can't be there), but I have seen vmm32.vxd.

More info for you--if, by chance, a UMAX or Genius scanner was just hooked up (or software installed, or whatever), check out this link. I have seen this problem with win98 and those scanners several times. This really works!
