this is missing, cannot find file, how do i restore this, it is keeping me from restaring in MS-DOS MODE whis is keeping me from running scanreg/restore. please help.

if you have bootable floppy from another machine you can try this command sys c: this will transfer the command.com file to your HD just make sure the O/S versions are the same win98 win98se or win98ME?

all i have are two compaq quick restore cd's. my windows registry is corrupt and i am lost without win98se cd. if i can get into dos i can restore the registry to an earlier time.

killowhat - more info please (your other post not much better) - o/s, PC spec, what you were doing, how this came about etc. You get a better response if you give better info (like I've seen this mesage beforwe in a number of situations - but need some context to 'place' it).

i am getting errors everywhere too many to keep up with, windows has been corrupted i do not know how or why.i cannot access hp director for my all in one psc2110, i cannot access hp website. i cannot restart in ms-dos and it goes on and on and on i can access the internet, all my programs work . something has gone wild with windows, it needs to be restored.

all updates many upgrades way too much to do a restore from the cd's this would put me back 4 years.
as this is a compaq this makes it worse i have no win98 cd. i know this is not a very professional response but the best i can do.

If you have any internet access to the machine, go to the Panda site and the Symantec sites for online virus scans.

If appropriate they will provide links to specific virus removal steps.

Search on the Security Forum here for on-line Virus scanners.

Search on the Windows 98 Forum here as well.

If you could download from here a set of Win98 boot diskettes it would help you:

Try to copy that file to the place it belong from win98 cd.Or run setup from its directory.

The command interpreter will be restorED.
iF IT CONTINUE run fresh installation of win98.

A copy of the command.com file can be found in the C:\Windows\Command\EBD directory.
Put a copy of it in the root of C:\ and in the C:\Windows
directory.

tinyurl repaired windows 98se. actually i think it just reinstalled over the existing windows, but i can now use my printer and getting no errors.check it out very good, just download then install on floppy restart pc insert floppy and follow instructions.

I understand the tinyurl reference now.
The one in my head was the ability to store large strings of address information, give it a name, and use the tiny name as a replacement.

So, you downloaded a 95 boot disk image, and repaired things. Excellent. But to be fair to the responders above in your query, the notion of repairing your hard disk with a new boot sector deserves some recognition.

I feel compelled to note as well that what the site offers is very good, but:

1. Some of the boot distributions likely are in violation of what Microsoft views as public domain;

2. The site http:\\

http://www.bootdisks.com

offers a similar service, and would be my preference.

3. There are other sites, http:\\

http://www.nu2.com

is liked by many here.

But, in the end, Microsoft offers a way to create boot disks and reovrey disks during installation. Do so.

i tried several boot disks i had ,none worked for me. even tried ultimate boot disk. really booting was not the problem windows was the problem. as far as microsoft.
