i have a toshiba satellite P10 and have reason to believe the memory module is faulty (dry joint? dodgy componant? im not sure exactly)

i would just like to know where the techs buy there hardware from (preferably uk).

the spec is "512Mb 200-pin SODIMM DDR PC2700"

so far i have found from

DABS : £39.73
Crucial Website : £45.81

do these prices look reasonable?
any other supplier recomendations?

I couldn't tell you about UK prices, but I usually buy all of my memory from Crucial here in the US. They are a known top-tier memory vendor, and many of the OEMs have Crucial/Micron build their own spec memory modules for use in their PCs.

DABS might have a better price on memory of the right size and speed, but do you know what brand you're getting? If it's not a quality, name-brand module, then you could be taking a chance of repeating the problem.

The other thing to check on the memory is that it has the right CAS latency. I know that some OEM specs call for slightly lower latency memory than is generally the norm. So you might be comparing a piece of CL2 memory to a piece that's rated at CL3. If your system requires the faster CL2, then you might run into problems using the cheaper stuff. If you don't know the specs, then most memory manufacturers (Crucial, Kingston, Corsair, etc) have "memory selector" applets on their web site to help you find what the OEM has specified for your particular make and model PC.

thanks for the input,

both are CS2.5 and the one from DABS is also Crucial. (they share the same product code, so im assuming they are identical)

still £40 still seems expensive for 512Mb of RAM

dabs is one of the cheaper sites...

you could also try some of the following:
aria.co.uk
overclockers.co.uk
komplett.co.uk
ebuyer

I recently bought some memory for my desktop machine and was surprised to find that the cheapest place to get it was direct from Kingston, the manufacturer. Have a look at

£40-£45 seems to be the setpoint.

aria/dabs/ebuyer...

i generally stick to aria and if you're not too fussed about quality the kingston value from aria is porety cheap. Seen it under £30 for 512mb. I have 3 sticks of that stuff over clocked in my machine running very smoothly!!!)
