Buying a house that IS ADSL capable

Here's my dilemma;

I am moving from my current home (with ADSL installed) and need to buy another that has ADSL capability.

Now the hard part, how do you get an ADSL line test done on a house that you wish to buy to make sure that it definitely has ADSL capability.

The house I wish to buy has a phone number but it is in the current home owners name, and the only way (AFAIK) to get a line test is to register with an ISP to buy the ADSL, now of course that's not to easy when the line is not in your name...

Now the BT online number check is a little vague when you move 3kms from your nearest exchange, it's a little bit of a gamble depending on what it says.

So do I get the current home owner to register with an ISP, get the line test done, get the current owners to cancel the order after the line test results, and then decide whether I want to but the house...?

Has no one in BT thought about this kind of problem?


I just hope the house I'm buying ~>3.5kms from my exchange has RADSL...

Who provides the DSL service in that area? If it is one of the Bells, you can go to their website and type in the current home owner's telephone number -- it will tell you within a matter of seconds in DSL is available.

I think he has neglected to mention he is in England, while the Bells are in North America I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I forgot to mention that I'm in the UK.

The provider (of which we really only have one) is British Telecom (BT).
