The quick answer would be 2005, but....

On my laptop from work, I have Visual Studio 2003 and there are no plans to move to 2005 any time soon. At home, my personal PC has Visual Studio 6 and I would like to purchase my own copy of .Net.

If I later develop VB code in 2005, can I at least open the project using 2003? I realize if I use new features I'm on my own to deal with that. If I can open the project then I would purchase 2005.

I'm trying to avoid the expense of upgrading to 2003, then paying again in a year or two to upgrade to 2005.

Thank You!!

Typically, you cannot open a newer project in an older Visual Studio. However, you can open an older project in a new copy of Visual Studio, and it will offer to upgrade it for you.

if you buy msdn pro (only slightly more then VS) then you will get the 2005 version if it comes out this year + the 2003 and the.net and lots of other goodies.

Thank you Chip and Christiaan!

I already have a subscription to MAP (Microsoft Action Pack) that provides lots of CD's of the latest products, but it looks like the MDSN Professional subscription would be the best option -- if Microsoft releases 2005 within the subscription year. For a fee of $899, I should receive 2003, then later receive 2005.

If I went with 2003, it would cost $549 (upgrade price), then the upgrade to 2005 would be an additional $549 for a total of $1,098.

Thank you for "making me think"!!

You can join the Microsoft Empowerment Program and receive a MSDN subscription for something like $300.00. You can search their website for it. Here is the link There are some restrictions but its not bad.

Shannan, thank you for your input, but I already went the route of the "MDSN Professional subscription".

Trying to decrypt Microsofts many pricing offerings could turn into a career (non-paying!)

Thank you!
