Business Objects is a very different tool than the basic Crystal Reports tool. It has a different architecture and can be considerably more expensive. BO has an intermediate data dictionary, which they call a universe, which sits between the reports/report designer and the database.
People usually group Business Objects with Cognos Impromptu as the high-end DSS tools, with Crystal Reports and Active Reports as the more pedestrian tools for reporting.
