I have a user with a new Sony CRX 175A1 burner. It is on secondary master with a dvd rom as slave and is recognised fine by the BIOS. It is also recognised by Win 2000, model name/number is correct but 2000 thinks it is just a CD Rom and will not recognise it as a burner. Have swapped the burner for a brand new one, same result. I am not overly familiar with 2000 and am a bit lost here but all the settings in properties etc look ok, can anybody help? All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Just bringing this back to the top in the hope somebody can help. Note that the system has Nero 5 installed and I have also tried to use Sony's burner testing utility. Both of these see the drive but do not recognise it as a burner. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Is the drive Nero compatable? It takes time for them to up date the the burner software to included compatability with new technology. Try their website for this info. Their website Nero5 supports you drive but try downloading the lastest version then have a look.

How is the drive connected? Have you any other media drives installed? If so try ripping them out then having just the burner.

I'd also check the MS web site for any issues with your drive.

Errr, thats all I can think of at the moment but will post again if I remember anything else

Spirit,
Thanks for the ideas, doubt if it is a Nero problem as Sony's own CD-RW diagnostic utility also fails to recognise it as a burner and that is supposed to work without any other software installed. Nothing on MS or Sony sites about any issues with this model. There is a DVD as slave on the same IDE channel, spose it may be worth pulling that and see what happens. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Hi Mulga,

I had a similar problem with a CD/RW and Nero on Windows 2000. When running Nero I got an error (dialog box) to the effect that it would not recognize the CD/RW drive as such by an ordinary user. Have you tried recognizing/using the drive when logged on as Administrator?

A FAQ at another site addresses the problem that only Administrator can use Nero to recognize the drive as a burner. It says, "The problem is that with the default Windows settings only the Administrator is able to burn CDs. There's a quick fix to this if you're using Windows 2000 or Windows XP Pro (in XP HOME this doesn't work). The way that non-admin users can burn CDs is to set a security policy restricting access to the CD-ROM/CD-RW to local logged-on users." There's also a program available from a Nero developer that fixes that problem another way.

In case this is the problem, here is the FAQ, by "thornc":
"How can I get Nero to work with all users in Win2K/WinXP?"

Let us know how you fared?

-Dave

Dave,
Thanks for that, I had already found it actually.... I was logged in as admin so does not apply All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

i think i can help you on this
let me dig around for info to send you

i got your cdrw model, can you give me the version of your nero ?

Thanks to everybody who replied, problem solved, apparently this model burner is slightly different in the Australian version (which this is) and requires Nero 5.5.5, also the version of the Sony test utility which I have came from the US support site and will not work with this burner, the Ausralian version is required. Thanks to Sony Austalia tech support, a free call and very helpful. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

you are welcome, the problem i had was similar to yours, i had Craig at Nero wrote me the device driver for my Toshiba DVD/CDRW combo drive
