Building a lfs

I'm thinking about taking a pludge into fully understanding linux in/out by building one from scratch
i'm just curious if any of you ever done this
is slackware the best for doing this?
btw i have fedora core 1 but i thought i'd leave it alone
just incase something goes wrong.
