Building A Computer - No display

Hello all, Ive just decided to throw some old bits of a computer together. When it powers on all the fans power up, the hdd whirls up and the cd drive all run. But i get no pc speaker beeps and the video card displays nothing.

The video card works on another computer and the ram works..

any ideas? the mobo doesnt display and lights either

CPU faulty maybe? Try a replacement, and check heatsink is a good clean fit to CPU - use new compound.

Does the BIOS support this type of CPU? Read the manual, or check mob manufacturers website.

One or more voltage rails in the PSU down? Substitute for known good one with same or higher wattage output.

Memory unsuitable for mobo? Check manual, then substitute if appropriate.

the cpu, memory.etc are all out of the same computer i upgraded from a few years ago. the cpu is one of them F***ed up ones that are a card thing then it slots into the motherboard. with the cpu, ram.etc all removed i get no pc speaker error beeps or anything. PSU is new and works on other systems

Hi drakantis,

I had a "Whew!" moment yesterday with a friend's HP. I've had it for a couple of weeks (they were in no hurry), because they had very low volume on their speakers and the volume was cranked. Any way, I set the computer on the floor a few days ago, right behind my recliner. Well, I forgot about it and when I reclined, BOOM! Yep, I knocked the computer over onto its side.

When I put it up on the table yesterday, I was prepared for the worst. Yep again. I hit the switch and the LED on the front of the computer turned on for about 1 second. Then everything went dead. Even that little green LED on the back that always stays on, even when the computer is turned off. That went out after pressing the power button. I could unplug the cord, and try it again; but, after just a second, all would still go dead.

I removed the power cord, pulled the RAM, and removed the battery. A few minutes later, I put it all back together and was able to power up the machine. Whew!

I don't know what it was, but it sure didn't like to be tipped over on the floor.

Take your computer outdoors when blowing out the dust; it's mostly skin dust. A clean computer is a cool computer.

any bell codes (beeps) to tell you what is wrong, if that is not scuppered by the speaker not working (is it connected up ok?)... pull the jumper to reset the BIOS and try again

im getting no beeps at all, im using a new pc speaker.

Take out everything so that you have the following only.

Power Supply
Motherboard
CPU
RAM
Video Card

Turn it on and see if anything works then. If not re seat your memory and make sure the PC speaker is plugged in to the correct pins if it is an external pc speaker.

I had the same problem just two days ago with a PC in work...i changed everything Ram CPU even the PSU all to no avail... finally at my wits end i changed all the components onto a different MOBO and with no hope at all the bl@@dy thing powered up...explore all avenues then try a different MOBO.






It just might work!

Most likely something is not seated properly if all the commponets work and are compatible. This has been what I find the most common cause for no post codes. The worst can be the CPU. Don't be afraid to remove the heatsink and reseat it a few times. Just be sure to have some alcohol and some new thermal grease before starting.
