BT Yahoo browser problem 1

I have a web-site which has been running properly for 7+ years with no major hiccups - Now (on 1 PC only, that I know of, and where BT Yahoo Browser is in use) my web-site fails to complete loading and I get the message:
"An error occurred inside a plug-in contained on this page"
When I click on OK I then get this:
"The plug-in didn't initialize properly"
when I click on OK I can view the page but when I try to link to another page I get:
"Yahoo Browser has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience . (send report) (Don't send report)"
When I cancel out of this message I'm sent back to the desktop with the internet session broken - This pattern now happens on the same PC when IE is used as the browser, which was initially OK!
I must emphasise this scenario only happens on this one PC so far as I know, but it's fatal there - The PC has XP IE 7 & all patches is virus protected and clean - Also I don't have any plug-ins on my site only some javascripts, which work everywhere else!
Has anyone got any ideas what could be happening here please?

Didn't even know Yahoo had its own browser...

1. Does the entire site render differently in the BT Yahoo browser?
2. What kinda plug-in is the browser looking for?

Nor did I, but that's what it calls itself 'BTYAHOO Browser'
What I can see of the site before I'm ejected, it appears to render just as it should, but it doen't say what kind of plug-in its looking for

As I said I have some javascripts on the page, but no plug-ins as such - I can't figure to what its referring, and why this is the only time in 20000+ hits that this error's ever come up - I think the error message is one of those misc things that get used when the problem is indeterminate!

is there a way to contact support for BT Yahoo browser? If so, send them an e-mail with a screenshot of the error.

Does this error come up every time you visit the site in this browser? Or is it intermittent? Did you try clearing the cache and seeing if the error comes back?

Hi GUJUm0del, I went one better than contacting them, I let them log in remotely and test it for themselves (they didn't have a clue and couldn't suggest what was wrong)
Cache cleared error returned
URL but view source is hidden

OK ca8msm the right click is disabled, but do you know why BTYAHOO can't or won't load the page?

Hi

homeric, your source code is not hidden and the right click is not disabled. That stupid JavaScript code you pasted into the page does nothing in Mozillas, Opera and Safari. In Explorer indeed shows the [tt]alert()[/tt] message, but that does not mean the right click is disabled : press the right mouse button and keep it pressed, press Escape to make the [tt]alert()[/tt] disappear, release the right mouse button and the context menu appears.

Now that I took a look to that site with all five browsers, one of them made the QuickTime plug-in to yell something about extension associated with it. I never touched that association since I installed QuickTime, so it may be the side effect of some bug.

Anyway, I suggest to renounce to both the right click "disabling" script and the background music. Personally I find both rude.

Feherke.

I assume it's something to do with the plug-in that is required to view your page. Since I don't want whatever it is installed on my PC I can't say for sure.

That's the problem, there is no plug-in needed to view my page - homeric

Didn't intend to rattle your cage

Can't access the site from work, stupid filters. Will check it tonight from home.

Wait, he has BOTH background music and disabled right-click function? Ahhh, that's a cardinal rule of "no-no" in web development.

feherke, I don't find that rude as much as I find it unprofessional and bad web development.

In any case, homeric, if the good folks at BT Yahoo didn't know what is causing this issue then identifying and fixing it will be very hard. It could be a browser bug that we have no control over, and ergo can't fix. It can also be your code (which I doubt because the issue happens sporadically). In any case, if you can open a ticket with the BT Yahoo and be on their case for a status update every couple of weeks. After all, nagging does have its upside, lol.

It could be something to do with the embedded player:
Code:
<embed name='casong9' src="casong9.mid" mastersound
            loop="false" autostart="false" autorewind="true" hidden="true" width="0" height="0">
but the source code is in quite a bit of a mess and I don't have time to go through it all to see if that really is the case or not.

ca8msm, if that embed tag is the culprit shouldn't the error occur all the time? Why would it occur sometimes? (Unless that embed tag is running on a rotating script-esq method.)

Well, one way to test for sure. I guess homeric can remove that tag and see if that fixes the issue.

homeric,

I think you need to have confidence in your content (or perhaps have more content that you can be confident in). I think your problem is that all the stuff you've got on your site is old hat to you, so you feel the need to add animated gifs and javascript clocks, and fancy java slideshows and whatever other gew-gaws you can lay your hands on. Heck, you've even got a press release that's an executable file, for what some unfathomable reason (like many people, I'm not going to run a mysterious .exe file on my PC).

For many people, all that stuff gets in the way of engaging with the site. Remember: less is more. You've got some good pictures, and other stuff that could form the basis of a good site - it just needs better focus.

The site says your aim is to "promote the Caribbean island of Grenada through its participation in The Chelsea Flower Show". I don't think your site is really doing that right now - there's some fairly cursory information about Grenada (plus some useful if not always legible stuff on the gardens page), a whole load of names that probably aren't all that interesting to anybody else, links to some related sites and some totally unrelated ones, an ad for some Outlook Express product (huh?), and finally a single paragraph about the event your site is supposed to be about.

Think about the people you're hoping to attract to this site: people interested in horticulture, people interested in Grenada, people who might be interested in both. What questions are they going to have...

Where/what is Grenada?

What's special about the plants that grow there?

Are there companies offering horticultural tours to the island? What is there to see?

What plants were on show at Chelsea?

Can I grow them in my own garden/greenhouse?

etc. etc.

I've just come up with those off the top of my head, you could come up with others - that will give you a guide as to what content to produce.

Hope you find this critique helpful, even though you didn't ask for one!

Chris

You're right I didn't seek a critique, but I did find it very helpful

I totally take your point re the Press Release, and the rainbow clock, and the Outlook ad

I put a slideshow in 2 years ago, then dropped it last year, because there was no feedback, and now its been specifically requested by my sponsors, so that must stay

I agree that the gardens page can be slightly illegible, now I look at it again I can see it doesn't have enough contrast

The list of names is smaller than it used to be, but again I have to show that to placate my sponsors, and it is appreciated in Grenada, and by ex-pat Grenadians many of whom know the individuals involved

Equally, the music is something you didn't comment on, but which my visitors appear to like - Its default is OFF by the way

The links are not arbitray and all those I use have been requested by visitors, sponsors, etc, & are all relevant to our aims

Finally I like your approach to the way ahead, and I'll take that on board - Your critique has been very useful to me

I worked in IT, mostly database programming & UNIX scripting, until my retirement - Then I learnt about HTML and started trying to build web-sites - However being
self-taught, and working alone, has its draw backs and it's often difficult to see the wood for the trees

Nice one mate!
