I loaded a new game onto my system on Saturday, which required DirectX 9. Everything was fine until last night, when it froze like a popsicle. I ended up having to do a cold boot and got the infamous BSOD. This in itself is not a problem, but it won't reboot. I get to the screen that allows me to choose Safe Mode, etc, but it still won't boot. It won't even go back to the last known configuration. I wanted to try and boot with the XP CD, but can't find it (organizaional skills need work).

Ideas?

Thanks. I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Greg,

Chkdsk will not work from the floppy method, unless the Recovery Console has been pre-installed.

"Running the chkdsk command requires use of the Autochk.exe file. CHKDSK automatically locates this file in the startup folder. If the Command Console was preinstalled, the startup folder is typically the Cmdcons folder. If CHKDSK cannot find Autochk.exe in the startup folder, CHKDSK tries to locate the Windows CD-ROM installation media. If it cannot find the installation media, CHKDSK prompts you for the location of the Autochk.exe file."

The possibility I never tried is to copy Autoecheck.exe from c:\windows\system32 into a new directory c:\cmdcons

Not test, a guess:

From the Recovery Console run from a floppy:
md c:\cmdcons
copy c:\windows\system32\autochk.exe c:\cmdcons
chkdsk /r

Thanks for that Bill
