the operating system is NT 4.0 and it was scanning for viruses when it went into this reboot, blue screen tailspin.
I tried using the nt disk to repair and the ERD but it didn't seem to make a difference.

thanks

Here is a way to get your pc working, a bit complicated, though, and you need to know which file(s) you are having problem with.
Reinstall WinNT from scratch, DO NOT reformat the partition and choose custom installation directory (c:\winback or whatever). Choose minimum install, because
a) all you need to do is to boot
b) the less you install, the more chances you have to keep content of c:\Program Files folder intact.
After reboot first thing you do is create NT boot floppy, look here for the info:

On the floppy, point your startup path to the secondary installation in the BOOT.INI.
Replace the file(s) you think you are having problem with in the primary folder. Manually change yout BOOT.INI file on the HDD to point to primary NT directory.
If after reboot it does not work again, you still have your boot floppy that points to secondary system folder, so you can boot and continue troubleshooting.

Good luck.
