Customer has an ECS mobo socket 478. The black plastic housing that surrounds the cpu and holds the clamps for the heat sync is broken. The plastic tab broke off so it will no longer hold the bracket in place for the heat sync. Can this part be replaced without replacing the entire mobo? If so, what is it called and where would I find one? And how do I remove the old one?

It's not something you can generally buy seperately but as we upgrade and repair in our workshop we throw away many dead motherboards but often we first remove this cradle/cage for spares.
I'm guessing most custom build shops do the same so thats your first port of call.
Note* these cradle's aren't all the same, they vary depending on heatsink fitting.
They are usually fastened either by screws or "push through" retaining clips, you have to push the centre pin through to relieve the lugs that can then come together to clear the hole, in most cases this can be done without removing the motherboard.
Best of luck.

Thanks for the quick reply. I found someone who says he can get me one, but I won't know until tomorrow.

Got the part, replaced it on the original mobo, works fine!

Triffic! [smile2]
