broadband speed tweaks - do they really work?

I've been reading on a few sites about a couple of registry mods that are supposed to speed up internet access on a broadband enabled set:

The first is the QoS packet scheduler thingy, where the bandwith limit % is changed to 0 and the second is the ie6 hack that increases the number of simultaneous downloads to 10.

My question is this: Do these really work or are they just a couple of gimmicks by some mod-fiend? If they do work, what's your best guess about the speed increase (20%, 50%?).

Thanks

I have never seen any improvement by increasing the packet size.

The QOS is much talked about for slowing the network. MS made a point of explaining that in general it doesn't - I agree.

I wasn't aware that you were limited to the number of downloads at the same time. But whats the point of downloading so much in one go - apart from each download takes longer and the overall result will be fragmented files.

If there is a limit, get gozilla, realdownload or any other downloading software if your desperate!!

Most I ever download is 3 at a time.

For multiple downloads, stay clear of gozilla etc crap.
Each download will NOT take longer unless you are downloading from a fast server. Most downloads are slow anyway, since the server cannot follow.
Tezzie?
The overall result will be fragmented files?
Why is that? It mostly happens with download tools.

To modify your limit:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

MaxConnectionsPerServer REG_DWORD (Default 2)
Sets the number of simultaneous requests to a single HTTP 1.1 Server

MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server REG_DWORD (Default 4)
Sets the number of simultaneous requests to a single HTTP 1.0 Server

These settings are made for a particular user and will have no affect on other users who log onto the machine.
If the solution is out there, let us know it was helpful, so others can benefit from it as well..
