Hello,

I am confused, I get conflicting answers from CA and reseller.

Running Win 2000 server

I was using Arcservit running on a single server (running NT 4) to back up the server that Arcservit is running on and to back up two other files that reside on another server on our local ethernet network.

I upgraded the server running the arcservit to win 2000 server.

I tossed the DAT tape drive and installed an Iomega REV 35 removable hard drive.

I called CA to find out what software to run on the Win 2000 server to accomplish the same backup scenario I was using with Arcservit (backup the server and two other files on another server) to the Iomega drive.

CA said to use Brightstor VII as it would run on win2000 and would also back up to a removable hard drive (not constrained to tape). They put me in touch with a reseller.

Reseller said I needed:

1 BABWBR1100S001C ARCSERVE BKUP V11 WIN PRODUCT 1YR VALMAINT 494.32 total: 494.32

2 BABWBR1100S221C ARCSERVE BKUP V11 CLIENT AGENT WIN PRODUCT 1YR VALMAINT 159.46 total: 318.92

1 MPL3MEDOLP100TC CA OLP SOLUTIONS KIT INITIAL ORDERS ONLY 19.90 1 total 9.90

I am confused as to why I need additional products such as "2 client agents" and "1 solutions kit".

CA told me that Arcserve VII was all I needed.

Reseller says now that I cannot backup the two files from the other server without buying the "client agents" and that I cannot run the install without the "solutions kit".

CA then told me that I have to buy TWO products, Arcserve VII and one "client agent". *(do i need the client agent to "see" the other server when setting up the backups? why do I need a "client agent"? what does it do?)

Can someone familiar with Arcserve enlighten me (I am wondering if I am getting the runaround).

hope someone can help me

thanks

ARCserve 7.0/2000 does support Windows 2000, does not need licenses for the Windows Client Agent, will backup other systems via network without an agent.

ARCserve 11 does support Windows 2000 and 20003, I do not know if a license is needed for a client agent but it will backup other systems via network without the client agent. Never heard of a solutions kit.

The solutions kit is the software (the box with CD-ROMS).
If you are doing an initial purchase of ARCserve products the solutions kit is REQUIRED although you can install all of it with a trial CD-ROM.

regards
