This past weekend, I updated my Symantec Mail Security from 4.0 to 4.6. I also updated the server software to Symantec Antivirus Version 10. I did not add any new services and did not change any of my antivirus, or filtering policies. I installed 4.6 over 4.0 - went well.

My information store (full backup) takes the same amount of time, HOWEVER, my brick level backup went from 48 minutes to 5 hours.

I have reviewed all autoprotect settings (via the server settings) and the SMSE settings, via the web interface, I don't see anything that changed or that is set incorrectly.

Any advice (besides 'don't do bricks')? Thank you

There may be something tunable within the AV software - but to me this seems a clear cut problem. What did you change ? You upgraded AV - now your backup is slow.

It is likely that the Symantec Mail security program uses MAPI to scan messages - a brick level backup uses MAPI too. This isn't anything that can be tuned in ARCserve.

thank you for the non-helpful reply. I know what I changed. And I understand mapi scanning. I was curious to see what others had experienced.

*sigh* you clearly know the the cause and effect of the slowdown you are experiencing, and I've tried to help you by advising you that there are no tuneable settings related to this from the ARCserve side, I didn't even tell you not to do bricks! What more are you looking for ?

Have you tried posting to a related Symantec forum to see if they have any ideas or perhaps someone else has the same problem, maybe with ARCserve, maybe with another Backup software ? If so, what was their response ?

BettyB,

We have seen very similarresults with the Symantec Exchange Interface and it performance seems to vary greatly between versions -some good some bad with no really clear pattern as far as i can find although the Symantec forum may unlock more info.

You are not alone with this and neither is Arcserve. It causes the sameproblems with Veritas BackupExec as well.
