Hi all, I just bought a new power supply for an old computer. When I put the power plug in the back of the power supply all I here is a high pitched noise, and nothing else happens. Is this new power supply crap or what??

Thanks

Why did you buy the new power supply?
Did the old one fail?
If so, it could be another component ie hard drive is damaged and preventing post.

Well, I bought the power supply within this month, for an old computer that worked last time I checked. If I unplug the atx power connecter from the mobo and then put the power back up to the power supply then I get no sound I am confused.

Confused? so am I!
I don't understand what you are saying.

The ATX connector needs to be plugged in to the motrherboard in order for the soft switch (power button) to turn on the PSU, this operation works through the motherboard and power harness, to carry the interupt signal back to the PSU.

A high-pitched sound emanating from a power supply is never a good thing, especially if the PC is off. It sounds as if something shorted, either on your motherboard, or in the supply itself. If the system worked before, then I would have to suspect the power supply since that is the only thing changed.

I suggest returning the supply for a new, preferably name-brand, supply and hope that this power supply hasn't damaged anything on the board or its attached peripherals.

Thanks Freestone, I think I will return that darn thing.
