brackets within a bracketed query?

I have a query that requires brackets ([]) around it. I have a field name ( not my doing, I promise) that has several spaces in it and the field needs to be refered to with brackets. When I use brackets within an already bracketed query, I get an error that says 'invalid bracketing'. Does anyone know what the syntax for this is?
