Hello, I would like to install Solaris 8 onto a box that doesn't have a CDROM drive installed. But I do have an external SCSI CDROM drive. Is it possible to boot off an external CDROM in order to upgrade the OS of a particular Solaris box that doesn't have a CDROM drive internally?

Hi,

I've now run setup_install_server on the machine I'm booting from. This copies an image of the OS from the CD to the server. If I now run add_install_client on the CD everything works OK & I can boot my other machine over the Network.

If I run add_install_client in the directory where the CD stuff was copied I can boot my other machine over the Network but it's much much quicker.

So if you're doing this a number of times I'd recommend running setup_install_server.

(I still never managed to get the thing to boot over the net before running setup_install_server, any suggestions?
Ethers & Hosts were set up OK, add_install_client was run from the CDROM)

Perhaps check whether or not the /tftpboot directory was set up and in.tftpd enabled on the boot server before you ran the setup?

Have a look at the notes near the beginning of the add_install_client script for details.

Steve's right, however you can (as he observed earlier in the thread) specify the IP address and MAC on the add_install_client command line instead, if you prefer.

Annihilannic.

Hi,

All the timestamps for the /tftpboot directory seem to correspond with when I ran setup_install_server so I guess that was probably the problem

Many thanks

:)
