Hi all,

I was trying to boot up from a formatted, installed with XP tablet, USB HDD, but was unsuccessful.

The 2.5" HDD was initially connected to a HDD bay on a HP notebook, and formatted, installed with XP tablet successful. I took out the 2.5" HDD and put into an USB casing and I connect to the same notebook and change the boot up configuration to boot from usb hdd. I booted up few times and can only see a black screen with a cursor on the top left corner, but could not load XP tablet successfully.

I connect the usb hard disk to a desktop machine and also i configured to boot up from USB HDD, but also could not.

What is missing from here?

Pls advise. Thks.

Where are the hidden and system booting files situated (Boot.ini, Ntldr, and NtDetect)? Are they on the USB drive or on the C: drive on your Notebook? Where do they point too, what Drive/Partition is your USB drive, when seen from XP's (if you have it installed) Disk Management Snap-in?

Will it load with the aid of a Floppy Boot Disk if you have a Floppy drive?

The boot.ini files are all on the USB drive too as I've taken out the HDD and connected it via USB adapter and boot up using the "Boot up from USB" option.

But can only see cursor blinking from the top left.

Can you clarify, is there any dual booting going on here?

XP will not boot

I didn't know you could use a XP installed USB hard drive as the boot drive for a laptop.

I thought that any mass storage device (especially by USB connectors) were given the next available letter after the BIOS checked it's host system.

example: (I have 3 USB connections on laptop)

if I place my MP3 device in the first slot; it would be letter E: .

then, if I place my daughter's MP3 in the second slot (and mine was still attached) her's would be letter F:

still, if I place my 2gb flash drive in another; it would be letter G:

and so forth...

If you succeed, please post back as this would be very beneficial to me and others here, I presume.

Dear all,

As notebook always comes with a 2.5" HDD installed inside the HDD bay (screwed in tightly). I had explored the BIOS option and noticed that the boot up option offers "Boot up from USB storage". Was trying to install XP Tablet on the USB HDD (160GB) directly but to no success. In the end, I took out the 2.5" HDD from the HDD bay and replace it with the 160GB. Booted up from the native slot as usual and setup successfully.

I took out the 160GB HDD, connect it with IDE-USB adapter, and connect to the notebook via USB port and tried to boot up using USB port, but was not successful. I only saw a cursor blinking on the top left corner during the POST.

What have I missed out?

Yes i did. The booting files are all in the usb drive. I'm booting from the internal HDD (HP Pavilion Tx 1000), Vista home premium. I connected the usb hard disk to the notebook and the usb was detected as M drive. I also used another software, call vistaboopro v3.3 to add another os entry, i.e. the XP tablet (of M drive). However, still not able to boot up.

Have a look in Disk Management, which drive is described as Healthy, (System, Active, Primary Partition)? This is where all the Booting files seem to reside in my XP/Vista dual boot.
