boot sector of harddisk

If you specify the purpose, one of us can probably help.
If you are interested in Harddisk serial number,
If you are interested to know which is the boot directory etc etc.. I know to get these info.. but dont know to manipulate boot sector unless.. you want to loose all your data.

i have a discussion that even we format a hard disk we can able to retrieve all the datas itseems, that too useing the boot sector reading it like that.. iam not well known in that, it would like to know more about the hard disk.. can just help to me to read hard disk boot sector ..
