Cisco newbie here...experiencing a boot problem with my 1720. When it first powers up, it goes directly to a Rommon > prompt. If I type "B Flash:IOS" it then goes into the IOS. But if I power-cycle, it goes straight back to the Rommon prompt. what am I doing wrong?

Check your configuration register. It should be 2102.

would the command to change the configuration register go something like this?

> confreg 0x2102

if so, I tried that and I get the following error when it boots up:

loadprog: bad file magic number: 0x0
boot: cannot load "flash:"

Based on what you're showing, it looks like the IOS is corrupted. What is the history of this box? What IOS is it running. How much flash and DRAM does the box have, etc.? Has anyone tried to upgrade the flash and interrupted the process? How large is the image you're trying to load?

Just a heads up on what happened. I did indeed have a corrupt version of the IOS stored in flash. I had pointed the bootstrap to a clean version also stored in flash, but that wasn't working. Apparently it was trying to boot from the version located FIRST in the flash. I deleted that version and all was well.

You would either have to delete to old version or set the conf reg to 0x2103
