Recently I installed an LG CD-ReWritable Recorder [model – CED-8081B, internal IDE] on a machine running Win NT Server. The installation went off without a hitch and I booted up the machine as usual. Next I went to the “Add New Hard-ware” wizard and the burner was recognized. After, I was prompted to restart the machine, which I did. Only now the machine freezes at the very beginning of the windows boot process.

I tried every safe mode possible, but none of them would work. I also tried booting from a floppy, which would produce a message saying there were no hard drives present.

The only thing I didn’t do was install the drivers that came with the burner. Could this be the cause of my problems?

Any HELP or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you able to get back in by removing the drive? I have successfully used the 8080b drive in all OS'. I have never had to apply any drivers.....not sure what differences there are between the 8080 & 8081.

Does your computer use a 3rd party ATAPI/ATA driver or the native NT 1.2 version? If the Add/Remove HW wizard inadvertently installed the ATAPI 1.2 driver this may have caused the problem. Typically, NTdetect should pick up the IDE device without even going through the Add HW wizard.

I would think that choosing the "Last Known Good" configuration would get you in. If you didn't create an updated ERD prior to installing the drive then you may have to take extreme measures to get back in. Doug

tried "Last Known Good" and removing the drive, but no go.
I also got an email from LGE saying;
Please uninstall the IDE cable going to the writer, enter the bios and choose PIO mode 4 for the
channel and port that the drive is connected to. Then reinstall the drive and things should be
fine. Bill
Which I did and didn't work.

re-install sounds like the quickest option now If in doubt get the Ball Pein Hammer out
