I have recently installed Win 98 2nd ed. into a machine and for some reason, it is saying there is a boot disk failure and I need to insert the system disk. If I put the CD-ROM in the machine it will start up, but not if I don't. Thanks for the help

Open a DOS box, and at the prompt, type: fdisk /mbr
See if that helps, if not, boot to the startup disk and at the A: prompt, type: sys c:
Cheers,
Jim

It sounds like the boot sector of your HD was slicked or damanged. (I think it's sector 0, someone correct me if I'm mistaken.)

Anyway, I have to go along with Jim's reply. It is the best recovery method I can think of also.
