Blurry/Unclear logo - Extreme size issue

Hi guys,

I've searched around a bit here without any luck so decided just to ask.

I am adding a logo to an invoice. The logo is a simple jpg file created through Adobe Photoshop. It is 3 inches wide X 2 inches high in Photoshop.

When I insert this as a Picture into Crystal 8.5, it appears as an image that takes up my entire screen. It is at least 12 inches or more in width and close to that in height as well.

If I try to shrink this in Crystal, it becomes blurry as is expected. I have shrunk the logo through Adobe to about 3/4 of an inch so that it will then appear in Crystal at the correct size, however it still blurs. Printing the 3 X 2 logo out through Photoshop, it looks perfect and is the right size.

Is there a setting in Crystal to make it use the normal proportions as it was created?

I believe your problem will be fixed in Photoshop. Make sure that you've chose the correct Unit of measure when you adjust the size of your image. If you truely have it set to 2 inches x 3 inches in Photoshop, it should appear this size in Crystal. To be certain of it's size in Photoshop, go to [View] - [Actual Size] or [Actual Pixels].

Crystal Reports has very primitive image handling capabilities. If you resize in CR and you don't get the resize exactly right your picture will be blurry. For that reason, you should always resize outside CR.

That being said, the previous writer is correct. Your image will come into CR the same size as it is created. So if it appears big in CR, your pixel/image size is big to begin with.

Better image control has been requested for a future version. We'll see if it happens.

I went back into Photoshop 6.0 and took a look. Upon hitting View->Actual Pixels, it did indeed jumbo-size it and it was almost as big as my entire screen.

I have the rulers showing on the image and they seem to tell you that the image is 3" X 2". Of course the ruler is almost as big as the image and it is obviously not 3 inches across my monitor.

Upon pressing View->Print Size, the image is shrunk to what is actually 3 X 2. At that point the zoom is 24% of the actual size.

In order to get the image to look like this at 100% zoom, I had to shrink it to what Photoshop considers about .75" X .5". I kept it at the highest quality possible while resizing too. (Help->Resize Image) And even when I put the image in Crystal, it comes in correctly, but still appears blurry.

It seems like this ought to be something I can fix in Photoshop as you guys mentioned. Any idea on how to get it there? Will the image have to be created at the correct size to begin with or is there some other way to keep the resolution through Photoshop?

One other thing I wanted to mention. When I printed the 3 X 2 image directly out of Photoshop, it printed in the middle of a page, was exactly 3" X 2", and was clear as a bell.

This just doesn't seem logical to me.

I just inserted the image into MS Word and it printed out the correct size as well. Crystal is so silly.

Just in case anyone has this problem in the future, thought I would post a work-around that seems to have worked for me.

Open a MS Word doc and insert the image into it. Simply copy and paste the image from the Word doc into the Crystal Report. The image remained clear on the Crystal printout.

Correction: Rather than copying and pasting the image, cut and paste it. Otherwise, the links to the Word doc will cause the image to have problems if you move the report to another machine or remove the Word doc.

When previewing or exporting (PDF/RTF/Word) OLE objects, charts, subreports or pictures inserted in Crystal reports (8.5 or 9.0) you may experience a loss of image quality.

The problem and the solution are described by a Crystal Decisions tech support document at:

You basically need to set the value of two keys:
1. BitMapMagnifDenominator (value should be 1)
2. BitMapMagnifNumerator (value should be 4)
