Is there a way in exchange or the registry to block attachments by extension type? I know various virus scanners can do this (scanmail, etc) but is there a way to set this in EXS?

I don't believe there is, only solved by 3rd party software or firewalls.

Nope, this is not possible with pure Exchange 5.5. I use Norton Antivirus for MS Exchange. Works good, but if the filtering list is large, it could take some time for e-mails coming through. However they released a new version called Symantec Filtering... something. It should work fine, both for Exchange 5.5 and 2000.

I agree. The answer is No. Not in Exchange 5.5.

For one of my customers, I did spend some time searching the net and the exchange related sites.
The options were
1) Anti-virus (like Norton)
2) Firewall (like Watchguard)
3) implement the latest version of
outlook (with security protection). This is
done at the user level. Has to be installed
for each user. Comes with a filter for known
list of extensions like .exe, .scr etc. I believe
we can also add any new extensions.

Option 1 involved changing the registry.
Option 3 involved too much time.
So option 2 looked better for our customer.
(Quite simple in Watchguard)

Regards,
