I'm working on cleaning up a XP Home system that's loaded down with spyware, adware, viruses, etc. In the middle of cleaning things up, something suddenly reset all of the screen property colors to black. So now I have black backgrounds, black text, black buttons...EVERYTHING is black. Consequently, I can't see what I'm doing.

I can log in as administrator and everything is okay. So...I guess my question is as an administrator, can I reset the screen properties of a different user? Maybe somewhere in the registry? Where do I start looking?

Yes, school kids often do that.

I think there's something in Kelly's Korner that will reset the user settings back to the default.

Excellent resource there, it's been bookmarked. You get a star! [smile]

Didn't find anything there that specifically addressed the problem, but a couple of the tips gave me some ideas on where to look in the registry to edit the settings.

However...while I was researching the problem, one of my students blindly felt his way through the menus by using the computer next to him to give him some indication of where the buttons were supposed to be and succeeded in doing a system restore to back up a couple of days...so problem is solved.

Now to return to getting that nasty spyware off before it happens again....
