hi, i have black ice defender trial along with zone alarm, and it tells me that i have blocked myself from accessing the internet...with black ice it tells me that "myself (the IP which says its me, but is not my assigned IP)" is UDP port scanning and port probing me, also it did 1 DNS spoof on me...its kinda confusing any help would be great, thanks! "Less work more network" (HP) -- its so catchy

It sounds like you've blocked access to absolutely everything!

Zone Alarm has a series of checkboxes which allow you to enable or disable certain programs.

If Internet Explorer (or whatever your browser is) is listed as blocked, then this situation will come about.

Also check for any software that is specific to your ISP, or any other utilities you regularly use in connection with the internet. If they're not listed, then Zone Alarm allows you to add and configure them.

Hope this helps

I ran both together - blackice is only good at telling you someone's trying various script attacks. Dump it and stick with zonealarm - you'll be plenty protected if you are smart with your rule settings and stick to high security on the net.

besides - blackice loathes ICQ file xfers, as well as many network games, and it's too irritating to have to constantly turn the thing off just so you can do what you need/want to do.

Black Ice gives pretty detailed reports - it's OK for detecting script attacks (as SD says), but useless when dealing with Trojans (bits of software that get loaded onto your PC then send out information). Zone Alarm deals with both very nicely. If you want more detail from ZA, go for the pro version - if you don't mind paying for such a superb product ;-)

Be aware that W2k SP1 breaks early versions of both products. SP1 closes off access to some undocumented API calls that both ZA and BI use, and, as a consequence, internet connections can fail.

Both companies now have a fix for this issue, however.

You can use Leak Test from GRC to check your ZA configuration.

Good Luck!
