So there I was playing around on the net when XP decided to reboot. No problem, but when it came up my login was there but it seemed to lose my account information (desktop, preferances, ect) and acted like it was the first time ever logging on (green field wallpaper and all). I used the restore preogram to bring me back to a known good date and it REALLY messed up my boot record. I ended up redoing the whole c: partition, and installed XP again. everything looked good. first thing I did was a virus scan, just to be sure, everything was okay. I didn't even have a chance to load anything other than official licensed XP plus and Office XP when it gave me a strange tip about something trying to delete my recycle bin.inf, but couldn't due to lack of internet connection (I hadn't set it up yet). It gave me that tip 3 or 4 times, rebooted, and now XP won't come up at all. Theories before I blank out all partitions and unplug my 2nd drive???

When was the last time you updated your AV software with new signatures? It's possible you caught a virus that wasn't in your AV software list.
