I'm currently on my fourth reinstall of windows xp. And after this, I now know that the bios settings: specifically the "system bios cacheable (win xp uses this area) and that the "ACPI" setting should also be disabled (conflicting IRQ's that I have been getting.)
Before I install xp. Are there more bios settings that should be checked, before I install win xp? These two settings cannot be changed after xp installation.
I have a Biostar mother, Athlon xp 2100, 768 ram, and a Phenix Bios.

1. Do not use any shadowing features, except possibly the BIOS itself.
2. Do not enable legacy USB support, if available
3. Do not enable Plug and Play support, if available
4. Disabling advanced power features in the Bios may not be sufficient to prevent the detection and installation of the uni-APCI model in the HAL. Use the F5 function key to select Standard PC during installation when prompted for SCSI or RAID drivers.
5. Do not select ECC as the parallel port model, use Standard or EPP
6. Do make certain there are no conflicts with internal modems or other serial devices and the motherboard support for serial devices.
7. Before setting any of these or other features, select if available the option to reset to factory defaults. Then make the changes. There are hidden (non-user configurable) features of every BIOS involving port assignments and other essentials. Reset to the defaults, or pull the CMOS battery for 5 minutes and replace it before configuring your BIOS for the last time before installation.

Good luck.

Howdy:

One last one.. disable the on-board (BIOS) anti-virus program.
