At boot-up I get an error, /bin/insmd exited abnormally. Then when the network and ipchains scripts are executed, I get /bin/ls command not found. As a result, my ethernet card can't get initialized.

When I open a a shell window and run the ls command, command not found. In order to get a directory listing, I use dir?? Which I didn't even define.

As a user, I have no permission to go anywhere beyond my own account.

Can anyone tell me what's going on? Everything was working the day before. I'm puzzled to why this is happening.

Maybe you were hacked? I have never seen a linux distribution without the /bin/ls command.

I had the same dang thing happened to me. LS wouldn't work, but DIR would. Weirdest thing. There is a file you can edit that you could add a command for DIR, and I'm sure there would be a way to get rid of the LS command. I just figured I was hacked and reinstalled linux. I needed the practice anyways...... Knowledge is Power......

Some hackers will write a program called 'ls' and create a need for the root user to execute the 'ls' command and delete itself right away. The NEW ls command just happened to copy the shell to the users directory and give root access to that copy of the shell for that user...

Hopefully I am wrong in your case... ;)
