I have recently been getting application failed to initialize errors for every program I have a short cut to on my desktop or when I run them from the program menu. This seems to only happen if I leave my computer on overnight. When I restart occassionaly i get application failed to initialize error with run32.dll. I decided to try and fix this by running chkdsk on restart. Well now, this is all it does. When I restart it goes through that annoying half hour process of scanning blablabla.. Then when it tries to start the OS it gives me lsass.exe applicaiton failed to initialize popup then blue screen.

I put my windows XP Pro disk in, booted up from the cdRom and performed a disk repair. I cant start up in safe mode to turn off the annoying chkdsk on startup.

First off why wont it startup in safemode?
Second how do I turn off the damn chkdsk on startup?
Why all of a sudden am I getting these application initialize errors?

I am writing this while I wait for my computer to complete stage 4.

At least I have my laptop! :)..

Thanks in advance for any help.

What do you mean by "Disk Repair"?

Your drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software that is self bootable which will thoroughly check out the condition of their hard drive.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console for Windows XP (Q307654)

Try ChkDsk /r from the Recovery Console.

You can determine whether your file system errors are legitimate.
To know if you've got a file system error, you can type the following
command at the command prompt:

fsutil dirty query c: (replace c: with your drive letter)

If the response is that the volume is dirty, then a file system error has
occurred, and Chkdsk should run automatically at startup to fix the errors.

Well now I am really hosed.

So I did the XP Repair from the XP PRO disk.

Everything was working fine until I went to re-load service pack2.

Now on bootup I get a services.exe application error. Application failed to initialize properly.

Im am in a big JAM. I have to commute 200 miles this morning because I can't remote log in to my work computer.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Thanks.

To check your RAM.

To check your Hard Drive.

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to check your drive for problems.

Other things to consider.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

If you can, run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy, but it seems that you wont be able to do anything from within Windows.

A few more ideas are to be seen in this thread, which include BartPE and Parallel installations to access your hard drive.
